Storage

The underground storage of natural gas is a vital part of the natural gas industry. The ability to store natural gas ensures the security of supply during periods with high demand by supplementing deliveries and represents a safety measure in case of production discontinuity.

The underground Gas Storage Branch Ploiesti operates six underground storages with operating pressures between 10 and 150 bar.

A short description of each of the storage facilities is found below.

Bilciuresti Storage

Characteristics:

  • Location: Dambovita county, approx. 40 km W-NW from Bucharest;
  • Year of commissioning: 1983;
  • Technical capacities:
    • storage: 1.310 mil. cm;
    • daily injection: 10 mil. cm/day; (*)
    • daily withdrawal: 14 mil. cm/day; (*)

Sarmasel Storage

Characteristics:

  • Location: in Sarmasel, 35 km NW of Targu-Mures, 35 km N of Ludus and 48 km E of Cluj-Napoca;
  • Year of commissioning: 1996;
  • Technical capacities :
    • storage: 900 mil. cm;
    • daily injection: 6,5 mil. cm/day; (*)
    • daily withdrawal: 7,5 mil. cm/day; (*)

Urziceni Storage

Characteristics:

  • Location: Ialomita county, approx. 50 km NE of Bucharest
  • Year of commissioning: 1978;
  • Technical capacities:
    • storage: 360 mil. cm;
    • daily injection: 3 mil. cm/day; (*)
    • daily withdrawal: 4,5 mil. cm/day; (*)

Cetatea de Balta Storage

Characteristics:

  • Location: approx.12 km SW of Tarnaveni town;
  • Year of commissioning: 2002;
  • Technical capacities:
    • storage: 60,8 mil. cm;
    • daily withdrawal: 0,2 mil. cm/day; (*)

Ghercesti Storage

Characteristics:

  • Location: Dolj county, in the neighbourhood of Craiova;
  • Year of commissioning: 2002;
  • Technical capacities:
    • storage: 150 mil. cm;
    • daily injection: 2 mil. cm/day; (*)
    • daily withdrawal: 2 mil. cm/day; (*)

Balaceanca Storage

Characteristics:

  • Location: approx 4 km from Bucuresti;
  • Year of commissioning: 1989;
  • Technical capacities:
    • storage: 50 mil. cm;
    • daily injection: 1 mil. cm/day; (*)
    • daily withdrawal: 1,2 mil. cm/day. (*)

Total storage capacity for 2017 is 2.830,8 mil. cubic meters.

(*)        The daily injection and withdrawal capacities are valid for the beginning of each production cycle.

 

Increasing the underground gas storage capacity through specific works is one of Romgaz’s main objectives.

Romgaz’s  priorities and objectives in the field of underground gas storage are:

  • Increasing the development rate of the existing gas storage capacities;
  • Developing new storages in areas with difficulties in natural gas supply during the cold season;
  • Increasing gas withdrawal flexibility from a maximum flow of  22 million m3/day to 30 million m3/day.

At the beginning of the production cycle the maximum gas quantity produced was 28 million Scm/day.
