"AURORA" – the largest national exercise for the Restoration of the National Electricity System under stress tested for the first time a unique scenario

Seven energy entities, with the specialized support of the Special Telecommunications Service, successfully carried out on Saturday, November 22, 2025, the largest exercise to restore the National Electricity System. The cooperation between Transelectrica, Hidroelectrica, Distribuție Energie Electrică Romania, ROMGAZ, Enevo Group, Nova Power & Gas and Eurowind Energy brought together, for the first time, classic technologies and modern solutions in a difficult scenario, which required quick decisions, impeccable coordination and synchronization. The result demonstrated by the success of the exercise symbolically called "Aurora" highlights the high-quality professional training and dedication of the operational teams, capable of supporting the operation of a complex energy system even in extreme conditions.

Under the coordination of the National Energy Dispatcher from Transelectrica, the technical teams worked in exemplary interoperability and synchronization, based on the operational protocols. The AURORA exercise highlighted the recovery capacity of the National Electricity System and the solidity of the collaboration between its main actors.

Over a hundred technical and operational specialists from all the entities involved participated in a unique exercise that simulated a total voltage collapse, in a scenario close to the real conditions of a major incident, which also makes public telecommunications networks unavailable. The restoration route started from the Șugag Hydroelectric Power Plant and integrated photovoltaic production, storage systems and a classic thermal power group, on a route that covers the central territory of Transylvania.

The action was attended by the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Energy, Pavel Casian Nițulescu, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense, the Romanian Intelligence Service and the Special Telecommunications Service.
