Electric Power Plant CTE Iernut
Situated in an important junction point of the National Power Grid, in the center of Transylvania region, CTE Iernut is in Mures County, on the left bank of Mures River, between towns Iernut and Cuci.
CTE Iernut has all the necessary facilities for operation: gas supply station SRM Cuci – operated by Transgaz), industrial water for the technological cycle (Mures River) and direct connection to the national electricity grid (High Voltage Electricity Station 110/220/400 kV Transelectrica).
ROMGAZ Electricity Production Branch (SPEE) Iernut ensures the production, maintenance, and development of this energy unit, actively contributing to Romania’s energy security.
Installed capacity and operational evolution
The power plant was initially design with a total installed power of 800 MW comprising 6 power units:
4 - 100 MW units – Czechoslovakian manufacturing:
o Unit 1 – decommissioned in November 2019
o Unit 2 – decommissioned in January 2019
o Unit 3 – decommissioned in January 2019
o Unit 4 – decommissioned in June 2020
2 - 200 MW units – Soviet manufacturing:
o Unit 5 – operating
o Unit 6 – decommissioned in November 2019
The units were decommissioned due to noncompliance with European environment regulations on industrial emissions. Unit 5 of 200 MW is the only unit operating with commercial license within SPEE Iernut.
CECC project – 430 MW in combined cycle
For upgrading the production capacity and increasing the energy efficiency, ROMGAZ develops a combined cycle with gas turbine (CCGT) power plant with 430 MW installed power and 56,42% performance rate. The objectives of the project are:
- Technical-economical parameters enhancement;
- Compliance with EU Directive 2010/75 on industrial emissions;
- Increasing production safety and operational flexibility.
The new units will be fully dispatchable, providing system technological services including active voltage regulation (primary, secondary, tertiary, fast), voltage regulation and ensuring reactive power, in compliance with Transelectrica standards – DEN.
Also, the new Combined Cycle Power Plant will have the “black start” option which represents the ability of some units to start without external electricity source. The purpose is to bring back SEN to a normal functioning status after a collapse (total or partial collapse of the National Energetic System – SEN).
ROMGAZ's vision in the field of electricity
ROMGAZ aims to become an active, efficient, and sustainable producer on the Romanian electricity market. The company's mission is to ensure the production and delivery of safe, high-quality energy in line with national and European energy transition policies.
In parallel with investments in high-efficiency conventional power plants, the company supports the development of renewable energy sources: wind, solar, geothermal, and biogas.
By adopting a diversified, low-emission energy mix, ROMGAZ is strengthening its position in the energy market, contributing to the balance and sustainability of the national energy production system.
